After several formations (Sleeptime, Tröms, Senoï), the current members of Wallack meet at the end of 2011 in Poitiers (France) to polish up a rising music, alternately stoner, post rock and psychedelic currents, sounds like Pink Floyd, Tool and Queens Of The Stone Age. Texts in French call back preachment borrow of black romanticism and surrealist visions. With the imminent release of his first E.P. produced by Yann Pillas (Abdomens, Rune) and the realization of a clip with the Studio Grenouilles, the band returns from now to the stage.

Forming in Poitiers, France in 2011 after its three players spent time in other lineups, hard rock group Wallack put together their first full-length release in 2015 and with it, positioned themselves among the best of the modern groups using psychedelic rock formulas. While some modern psych outfits take clear directives from classic artists, Wallack seems to freely combine various ideas and sounds since parts of their album are more rooted in metal, prog, and post-rock. No matter what style they’re working with however, guitarist/vocalist Cyprien, bassist Bertrand, and drummer/vocalist Vincent show an affinity towards epic compositions and a knack for concocting heavy grooves. As a result, Wallack is remarkably consistent, with a fine sense of flow from track to track.
Beginning with a section that almost recalls Slint due to the sense of unease created in its murmuring minor chords, album opener “Methrock” is pushed along by rhythmic drumming matched with subtle backing vocals and an echoing guitar belting out a discomforting main theme. Meandering through a mysterious instrumental break full of swirling, Middle Eastern melodies and tinkling cymbal, the track finally unleashes gravelly vocals which seem to be reading through some sort of list before a louder, more metal-oriented finale of snarling, chunky guitars and crashing percussion. Obviously, there’s significant change in the track over the course of its duration, and it certainly reaches a fever pitch by its end.
Even more diverse, “The Void” kicks off with accented, pounding rhythms and waves of feedback-laden guitar. There seems to be a mixture of English and French-language vocals going on, but things eventually dissipate into a slower, laid back section of Pink Floyd-like prog rock. Yearning vocals sound off amid alternately loud and chilled-out guitar licks before the track grinds to a halt in a whirr of mechanical noise. The song’s conclusion presents a reprise of the more punchy earlier stanza, with a noisy solo guitar emitting piercing, high-pitched tones over smoky vocals and a churning groove.
Marked by a stomping, head-bang-friendly beat enhanced by a bubbling, gurgling bass and buzzing guitar, “Diinns” features more breathy, French-language vocals and fairly typical metal chord structures. Though somewhat more obvious psych-tinged than the previous pair of tracks, this one is loud and gnarly, becoming downright sludgy in its final stretch and followed up by a piece in “Tijuana” that sounds like old-time psych rock. Pleasantly lazy and hazy with a swaying momentum, this one has jangling guitar alongside a hushed, more song-like vocal, while an abundance of buzzsaw guitar ensures that “Two Years Later” exists fairly comfortably in the world of modern hard rock. More focused overall, the piece is highlighted by melodic vocals that make it a memorable part of the second half of the album.
“2666” is another more epic number: after a somewhat brighter intro that finds croaky vocals matched up with glistening harmonic backgrounds, squelching guitar, and bouncing bass, there’s a sudden explosion of volume around the halfway point before a return to more laid back sonic territory. Wallack finish things with “Pluton,” arguably the song here that’s most similar to the type of music made by psychedelic hard rock group The Black Angels. With a bluesy chord structure, spoke-sung vocals that eventually yield to more intense secondary parts, and thick but aching guitar lines, this finale stays within the confines of Southern Rock prior to a rousing finale which seems to show off the best and more popular-minded aspects of the band who created it.
Even if some listeners may be turned off by the presence of foreign-language vocals, I didn’t at all mind that I couldn’t understand what was being said at times. More often than not, the vocals in Wallack’s music acts as an additional instrument: they rarely seem to be a major focal point of a track. Ultimately, it’s the eclectic compositional approach along with the assured instrumental and vocal performances that make this album stand out: Wallack winds up as a slightly better release than the vaguely similar Reflections in the Bowels of a Bird that I recently reviewed, an album that was quite solid in its own right. Most people may appreciate their psychedelic aspects more, but these two French albums also prove that quality hard rock is still very much alive – even if its American representatives tend too often to get caught up in gimmicks and sensationalism. It may be true that Wallack seems like a mash-up of familiar ideas, but that wouldn’t stop me from recommending it without reservation. Four stars.
